Celebrating carers at Christmas

The extra work carers do to make the festive season special, and how to support them.

Christmas is a season of giving and togetherness. For carers of people on artificial nutrition, it is also a time of extra dedication.

Caring for someone on TPN or tube feeding is a job that never stops. Feeds, deliveries, line or tube care and watching for problems all carry on through the holidays. On top of that, carers work hard to make sure the person they care for feels included in a season that revolves so much around food.

Carers find ways to make it special. Fairy lights on the drip stand, days out instead of big dinners, presents and games that everyone can share, or simply being there.

How to support a carer this Christmas

  • Offer practical help. Take on a few jobs, or sit with their loved one so they can have a break.
  • Say thank you. A card or a message can mean the world.
  • Include them. Make sure they are part of the celebrations, not just running them.
  • Give thoughtful gifts that are about them, like time out or something relaxing.

To every carer reading this: you are appreciated, and you are not alone. Thank you for everything you do.
