Breaking the stigma around feeding tubes and lines

Five things everyone can do to change how people on artificial nutrition are seen.

Stigma around feeding tubes and lines comes from not understanding. It shows up as staring, awkward questions, pity, or people treating you as fragile. We can all help change that.

1. Learn about it, and share what you learn

Find out why people need artificial nutrition and how it works. Sharing accurate information helps clear up misunderstandings.

2. Choose your words

Words that make feeding tubes sound scary or sad can hurt. Instead of "I'm so sorry you have to have that", try "It's good that it keeps you strong."

3. Make it normal

A feeding tube or line is simply another way of getting nutrition. Showing people on artificial nutrition as they really are, strong, capable and getting on with life, in books, on social media and in everyday conversation, makes a difference.

4. Listen to people who live it

When someone shares their story, listen with an open mind. Everyone's journey is different.

5. Speak up

If you see unkindness or wrong information, say something. Support awareness campaigns and encourage kindness.

Feeding tubes and lines save lives. Nobody should feel ashamed of the thing that keeps them alive.
